4TH EDITION SIROM WALK THE TALK JOINS UN CAMPAIGN

TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

The SIROM Walk The Talk 2015, the 4th in the series, sees several key partners uniting to End Violence Against Women. The theme for Walk The Talk 2015 “Men and Women Unite to Stop Violence Against Women” is in line with the United Nations “UNiTE to End Violence Against Women” and the #orangetheworld global campaign, to be held in conjunction with the UN 16 days of activism to eliminate gender violence. The colour orange is the official color of the campaign, symbolizing a bright and optimistic future free from violence against women and girls.

This year’s UNiTE campaign takes place with a focus on prevention, and in the specific context of the adoption of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, which includes a target on ending violence against women and girls. Over 450 ‘orange events’ are planned in more than 70 countries around the world ahead of and throughout the 16 days.

The SIROM Walk The Talk 2015 has as its key partners, Police DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF), and is supported by 2 women’s organisations, Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) and All Women’s Action Society (AWAM).

The walk will be 3.5km starting and ending at Taman Jaya, Petaling Jaya on 5th December 2015. An exhibition by PDRM and the other partners and supporters to promote and create awareness of the activities that are undertaken by the organisations in their respective role to End Violence Against Women, will be set up at Taman Jaya for walkers to view before and after the morning’s walk.

About 600 walkers from corporates and organisations are expected to participate.

The participation fee is RM30 per person and each participant will be entitled to a specially designed Walk The Talk T-shirt for the walk and a goody bag.

About Walk The Talk:
The Walk The Talk event was initiated by Puan Sri Siew Yong Gnanalingam in 2012 the then Federation President of Soroptimist International South West Pacific (SISWP) to have a federation wide campaign that would involve all the members of SISWP from the 13 countries.

Soroptimist International Region of Malaysia (SIROM) led the way by organising a 16-day walk with the theme “From Perlis to Sabah-Walk The Talk –Stop Violence Against Women” with 3 Soroptimist International Kota Kinabalu members walking 850kms from Arau, Perlis to Johor Bahru, and ended with a city walk in Kota Kinabalu. This event was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and supported by the Royal Malaysian Police. The walk earned recognition in the “Malaysia Book of Records for the Longest Walk by a Duo”, and had public participation in 7 cities in Malaysia, including Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

In 2013, SIROM organised their 2nd Walk The Talk event with the theme “Zero Tolerance, Zero Violence, Zero Victim” with a symbolic 2KM walk from the parking lot of Securities Commission to the parking area of Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club where talks covering topics like, “Prevention and Safety Tips”, “Women’s Rights”, “Women As Drug Mules “, “Cyber Crimes” and “Crimes Against Women” were held to empower the participants on preventive and proactive ways to be safe. The Soroptimist Film entitled, “Violence Against Women – A Year to Make a Difference” was screened before the commencement of the talks.

The walk was a collaborative effort with Amanita (Peace Lady), a special unit of the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) to engage housewives in neighbourhood safety and the D11 division of the Royal Malaysian Police that deals with sexual, domestic violence and child abuse.

For the 3rd Walk The Talk 2014, SIROM focussed on the support of men with the theme “Men on Board to Stop Violence Against Women” with the endorsement and support of the Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Khairy Jamaluddin and his Ministry as well as the University of Malaya. The walk was from Taman Jaya park to the University of Malaya where a panel session on the theme “Violence Against Women – The Men’s Perspective” was held.

The SIROM 2015 Walk The Talk, with the theme “Men & Women Unite to Stop Violence Against Women” is being held in conjunction with the UN “Unite to End Violence Against Women” during the 16 days of activisim from 25th November to 10th December to eliminate gender violence.

The partners for this year’s Walk are Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) whilst the support from Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) and All Women’s Association of Malaysia (AWAM).
