SI Club of Penang – Flood Relief Fund Appeal

After typhoon-like winds and non-stop rain for nine hours since 2pm on Saturday (4 Nov), Penang was badly hit with widespread floods, landslides and fallen trees in many areas. It was even reported that up to 80% of the State suffered from it.

This horrendous disaster has brought the death toll to seven, and more than 4,000 people have been evacuated to Flood Relief Centres. Countless homes have been affected, among the worst hit areas being Sungai Permatang Rawa, Kampung Sungai Juru, Kampung Sungai Rambai and residential areas in Prai, Butterworth and Bukit Mertajam. On the island, Jalan P. Ramlee, Kampung Jalan Zoo, Cintra Street, Chulia Street, Kimberley Street and 80 other areas were flooded as rivers and drains overflowed.

In the meantime, all authorities including the police, firemen, medics, MPPP and volunteer groups are working tirelessly to help the increasing number of flood victims. SIP has initiated a donation drive and sincerely appeals to all to lend a helping hand in this trying time.

SIP’s flood relief was planned along three missions.

The first mission was on 9 November, where three electrical items consisting of a rice cooker, steam iron and gas stove were distributed to 24 households at Taman Seri Setia, Tanjung Bunga.

The second mission consisted of sponsoring 250 mattresses once the respective houses were cleaned up.

The third mission is aimed for next week. Soroptimist International Club of Penang President Soon Lay Ean says, “Another 30 sets of rice cookers, kettles and gas stoves for Kampung Jalan Zoo. Delivery by Pensonic is scheduled to be on next Tuesday. SIP has utilized all funds received. Looking forward to help more when we receive more. My heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed for their generosity.”

SIP is currently seeking further donations to increase their assistance to the flood-hit community.
